Mrs. Minor's Second Grade
Important Dates
Here's the news for the month of March.
In reading, we are working on Unit 4. The skills in phonics to be taught are: syllable patterns, and vowel digraphs oo, ue, ew, and ui. The comprehension skills to be taught are: plot and theme.
Our next two reading tests will be on March 6th and the 14th.
We will revisit all the skills taught during this unit. We will then test on Unit 4 on the 21st.
It will then be time to begin Unit 5.
In spelling, our tests will be on March 6th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. The review test will be on the 21st. We will be writing some spelling words in cursive.
In English, the skills to be taught are: adverbs that tell when, where, and how. We will then revisit all the skills for Unit 3 before testing.
In writing, we have 8 lowercase letters left to learn. The students will start to write their names in cursive. We will then begin the capital letters.
In science, we have 5 lessons left for the module of balancing and weighing. We will then start our second module called changes.
The students will be conducting experiments where they will see chemical and physical changes occurring right before their eyes.
In math, we have just finished the section on fractions.
We will be starting our next chapter on subtracting 2 digit numbers. The students will be learning the concept of borrowing. I will be teaching it the way you were taught. The students will need to be practicing their subtraction facts. Often students know the process, but make errors subtracting with the basic facts. The skills taught will be: counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies altogether, subtracting 2-digit numbers with or without ungrouping, subtracting a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number with two zeros, subtracting a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number with or without ungrouping a hundred, subtracting a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number ungrouping twice, subtracting a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number with one zero, and solving addition and subtraction story problems.
