Dear Families,
Our reading, RTI, and math are moving along fine. We had our first reading test today and it went quite well. Please look in the folder for it on Monday. We will have our math test on Unit 1 on Tuesday. We will review next week so it will not be a struggle.
Our spelling words next week are short i.

Ask your child about the great program that we had for Officer Phil. It was with a magician and Turbo the Turtle teaching us stranger danger, safety, responsibility, and no bullying.
We are beginning our weather science module next week. This involves following and learning about the weather, completing experiments, and recording discoveries in their science journals. Ask your child about this next week.
Please remember to check your child’s planner for homework assignments and sign it every night. Listen to your child read his or her guided reading book Monday through Thursday and sign the paper in the book packet. On Friday your child will choose a book from our classroom library that they would like you to read to them (or they may be able to read) over the weekend.

Dearest Families,
I wanted to let you know that we had a very vague, but serious discussion about what happened on September 11th. I describe it that way because these children are so young and this is very difficult to understand and I did not want to frighten them, but I wanted to touch on a part of history. I emphasized the importance of the heroes who helped and how grateful we are to have them. I hope this did not send lots of worried questions home to you, but I thought it was important to discuss the event.
We will begin a new reading unit next week and our RTI groups. Our spelling words for next week are short a.

**Picture Day is on Wednesday, September 17th. You may send in your picture forms any time.
Next Friday, September 19th, is red and black day so you can wear a t-shirt with those colors if you wish.
**Please send in any book orders by the end of the week or place your order online. You may make any checks out to me and I will place the order online.

Dearest Families,
Our math addition fact families using circles and break apart lines were terrific this week. We will continue to use these for larger numbers to help the children see the commutative property of addition.
Our spelling words next week are:

We began our guided reading groups this week and were giving the children easier level readers to take home to ease back into the swing of things. They will be tested in October to check their reading levels and I will send home a paper showing you those results.
Every Friday the children choose a book from our classroom library to take home for the weekend and return the next week. Often it is a book above their level and one that you need to read to them. This is to continue their enjoyment of reading. Do not worry if they cannot read the book themselves.

Dearest Families,
We made it through our first week with flying colors! What a fantastic group of children I have in my classroom. They are working very well together.
You may begin to practice the spelling words ahead of time if you wish. We will write them in our planners next Tuesday. You do not have to do anything with them over the weekend. The spelling words for next week are word wall words again.

Next week we will begin our guided reading groups. The children will bring home a book packet everyday, except Friday. They are to read the book to you and have you sign the paper in their book packet. They need to bring the book packet back to school everyday, along with their planner and folder. Thank you so much for your support with our reading program. Today they are bringing home a book from our classroom library to enjoy. Please return it next week.
