The Girl Who Could Fly

Author: Victoria Forester (Lakeman)

Review By: Taylor Wise - 8th Grade - 2014

The reason I picked this book is because it is full of adventure and nothing is what it seems. When you read the beginning and discover she is a plain old girl on a plain old farm, it seems boring but right when you flip the page you see that the book is more interesting than made out to be. “The Girl Who Could Fly” is an extraordinary book about a girl named Piper who lives in the country with a rather boring life. All of that changes when she discovers that she can fly. Her mother and father tell her to ignore it but she can’t because she loves to fly. She is then sent to a school for extraordinary people. She discovers that the amazing school is not so great after all. The school is actually not to embrace her powers but to destroy them. None of the children that are kept there are allowed to leave until all of their powers have been removed. “The place she was sent to be kept safe may be the most dangerous place she has ever been.”

Coraline

Author: Neil Gaiman

Review By Josh Phillips- 8th Grade -2014

“Coraline” is a book written by Neil Gaiman. It is about a girl who, when seeking adventure, finds a door through which she travels. The other side of the door shows her a similar version of her world. She goes looking for adventure when she finds a black key. In the replica world, the people are different. First she spots the “other mother” as she calls herself, who is taller and thinner and has button eyes. After she comes back, her parents are both missing. Upstairs in the hall, she spots a mirror. She sees her mother and father both in the mirror. She later finds out that the other mother trapped them. She must find marbles with souls in them. Once she does, the other mother tries to keep her there forever, but she escapes.

I like this book because it is a combination of a mystery book and a children’s book. Kids sometimes relate to Coraline because sometimes kids get so bored they go on adventures and sometimes find things that they didn’t even know were in their own house. This book is one of those books that you can’t put down once you start reading it.
