English 8 Homework: Article of the Week

"Articles of the Week" will be given each week.  Expectations are that students read and annotate the articles according to the rubric below.  The original Article of the Week (AoW) concept was developed by Kelly Gallagher, a leader in the field of literacy education.  The format of the AoW handouts is from a template created by Vale Middle School, located in Vale, Oregon.

The purpose of AoW is to enable students to become stronger readers and writers. AoW helps to expand students' background knowledge of the world. Students will purposefully read and anlyze the text, leading to deep comprehension.

  Each AoW has 2 parts:

  1. Students read and annotate the text.  They must do more than simply circle or underline words, however- mature, thoughtful notes should be written in the margins.
  2. Students will write a one-page response.  At least one paragraph should summarize the article and another paragraph should be their personal reflection about the article.  The bare-minimum expected should fit one side of a full sheet of notebook paper.  More than this is welcome, of course!

Articles of the Week will be given each Monday and due on Friday of that same week.  The annotations and reflections will be graded.  After I hand back their graded A.o.W., if the score is less than a 4 out of 5 points, students may make corrections and hand it back in within 5 days to increase their score.   I will discuss the grading rubric with students and guide them through an example of completing an Article of the Week. Students also should review their notes taken on A.o.W. annotating and summary/reflection. Page 3 in our Interactive Notebook has suggestions for symbols to use when annotating and notes to write in the margins of the article.
