Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures Under Ground (The Original Alice in Wonderland) One summer's day in 1862 Lewis Carroll entertained children on a boat trip with a story of Alice's adventures in a magical world entered through a rabbit-hole. The ten-year-old Alice was so entranced that she begged him to write it down for her. It took him some time to write out the tale, in a tiny, neat hand, and complete the 37 illustrations. Alice finally received the 90-page book, dedicated to 'a dear child in memory of a summer day,' in November 1864. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897) and published in 1861, this book is one of the first personal narratives authored by a slave providing a first-hand account of the brutalities of slavery in American History. Karpeles Document: Connecticut’s Charter Oak In 1687, a representative for the King James II demanded the surrender of Connecticut’s government by confiscating the colony’s Charter. In a dramatic turn of events, Captain Joseph Wadsworth hid Connecticut’s Charter in a nearby white oak tree. Even today, hundreds of years after the great tree fell in a storm, this tree remains a symbol of the state of Connecticut. This simulation gives students the chance to "play hockey" with positive and negative charges. By positioning and manipulating positive and negative charges, students will move the charged puck towards the goal. She completed the composition in November 1791 when she was just 15 years old. The Timeline of Art History is a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world.
