Starting the new school year in our "RIGHT" MINDS!
We are off and running on another fantastic school year in the CCMS art room! Begining the 8th Grade classes with some essential drawing techniques. Parents; how many of YOU are in your "Right" mind when drawing?
Have a GREAT 15-16 school year everyone!
17th Annual Ebensburg Art in Bloom Spring Art Show will be held the weekend of April 25th and 26th 2015 at the Cambria County Courthouse. Several weeks leading up to the exhibit, CCMS students will join other area students in exhibiting their artwork in the downtown Ebensburg buisness' windows. (Check back for photos).
For students who wish to enter the juried weekend exhibition, the entry form is linked here...2015AIBApplication.pdf
Save that wrapping paper! With the holiday season upon us, students and parents are reminded that gently used or left over scrap wrapping paper can be re-used in student art work. Send it in at your convience and thanks you in advance!
Contemporary Totem Poles...7th grade students learned a bit about the meaning and significance of traditional totem poles. They were then asked to design their own totem pole which expressed some aspect of their contemporary life that held significance to them personally. The results were everything from profound to entertaining. Logan Prokop's totem pole, (pictured below), represents an appreciation for the "finer things in life". Great job Logan, and all other 7th graders!
CCMS students becoming color experts! 6th graders working on a monochromatic abstract painting as part of a unit designed to focus on color concepts and painting techniques. Other exercises in the unit included 7th graders painting nature images from photographs, and 8th graders manipulating color on a still life painting.
Wecome Back 2014-2015! The begining of the year brings excitment, enthusiasm, and new developments. This year is no different as we are adapting to a new schedule in the art room. The new "rotation"-based schedule will see students taking art/music/tech ed for 30 consecutive school days rather than 30 classes spread out over 90 days, (as it was the past 3 years). Coinciding with this change, students will now keep a student "portfolio" to archive their work over the entire 30-day rotation. This portfolio will be used as a final evaluation tool when determining their art grade, allowing for student-teacher reflection and observation of growth/learning. So please hold some space on your refrigerators for the wave of artwork that will be coming home at the end of your students' art rotation this year. Have a great year!
CC ART SHOWS STRONG AGAIN! Central Cambria High School and Middle School art students competed in the annual Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit on display at the Cambria County Community Arts Center from May 6 to May 29, 2014. Other participating schools include Westmont, Richland, Bishop Carroll, Windber, Ferndale, Forest Hills, and Portage.
The 6th grade art students completed a group piece entitled "cows" which was also awarded a first place early this year at the Mount Aloysius Art exhibit. 4/14 - Spring cleaning - While spring cleaning, 7th grade students were asked to find some "junk" with some loose meaning or attachment to them. These found objects were re-purposed into assemblage art inspired by Louise Nevelson. Great job 7th graders!
3/14 - Read Across America! The students at Cambria Elementary and jackson Elementary welcomed me for a presentation on children's book illustration as part of Read Across America Week. 2/14 - To Tweet or not to Tweet...That is the Question. During a teacher in-service this month, Mr. Santini presented teachers with information on using Twitter as a tool for communication in a professional educator network. Since being given the green-light to explore this exciting technology, the art room has begun tweeting...
@MrDummArt
is my new Twitter handle to follow for updates on many of the exciting and creative projects and events we participate in.
1/14 - Half way through the year. Special thanks and "good-job" to the first semester students! You've done a fantastic job this year in art class. To the 8th graders moving on to the high school, I hope you continue your artistic development and keep me posted on your progress! thanks again and the best of luck! - Mr. Dumm
12/13 - Art supplies make great gifts! As the holiday season is in full gear, don't forget that art supplies make GREAT gifts and stocking stuffers for students. Almost daily students inquire about such "cool" tools as kneaded rubber erasers, sketch books, new drawing pencils, markers, and more. Many of these things can be found at Walmart, and nearly everything for a student who loves to create can be found at your local Michael's store.
Framed student work also makes a great, original, unique gift for grandparents and aunts and uncles as well. A large selection of ready-made frames and mat board can also be found at Michael's, often at %40 off...check online for additional savings with %40 off coupons as well. They also offer fantastic custom framing, but plan to pay significantly more for that service. Instead, use the ready made, and frame yourself...it means more with the extra effort anyway!
Happy Holidays!
11/13 - Thank You Parents/Students! Thank you to all those who participated in the Holiday greeting card project through Mountaincolor.com. Because of your efforts we raised over $200 for the Central Cambria Art Program! This money will be used for much needed supplies such as pencil sharpeners, protective cases for our digital tablets, wooden drawing manequins, and text books. The artwork and the printed cards turned out awesome! thanks again, hope you enjoy sending these this holiday season.
10/13 - CCMS Wall Art Project Completed! Thanks to the Johnstown Welding Fabricators' very generous donation of materials and labor, the 2-year project to design, create, and install an original sculptural wall hanging to the CCMS courtyard is now complete. The artwork features a book which opens to expose symbols of the well-rounded education recieved at Central Cambria. Among these symbols, several books evolve into birds which freely fly from the opposite end of the piece. The artwork represents the importance of a well rounded education in the development of every person.
More to come...
9/13 - 2013 Off and Running! We are happy to start the new school year by welcoming back all students, as well as our student teacher, Ms. Deanna Mazurak, from IUP's school of Art Education.
