Mrs. Burkey's 4th and 5th Grade Science Site ![]()
Welcome to our 4th & 5th grade science web page!
We are always working hard and very busy. 4th grade must prepare for the PSSA ELA, Math and Science tests given in the Spring. 5th grade does not have a Science PSSA, only ELA and Math Here is some info that may help keep the days organized. Any time you have a question, please feel free to contact me.
This year will be a change for 4th & 5th grade. We are departmentalizing. Each student will be given a binder with color coded folders and notebooks for their subjects. They will take their binder with them throughout the day. 4th grade will have science and math in the morning and reading and ELA/Social Studies in the afternoon. Each subject area will be an hour. This will give more instruction time for each subject and also help the students stay organized.
Our class schedule will be:

In 4th grade Science, we cover a chapter approx. every 2 weeks. The students are given a vocab study guide when we start the chapter. They are tested on the vocab and are graded on several workbook pages reviewing the concepts learned in the chapter.
Once the Science book is finished in February, we will be reviewing for the Science PSSA using Measuring Up books and the mimioboard/interactive websites. We will also be working on our Science Modules from March - May.
5th grade does not have a science textbook. We will be using a variety of materials to complete units on Life, Earth, Physical and Space Sciece. We will also be spending some time on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities. 5th grade is more inquiry based: discovery learning doing a wide variety of activities using the scientific method. We received a grant for Robotics materials that we will also be integrating into science and math throughout the year to help enrich our STEM curriculum.
