Transitioning from School to Post-School

Autism Spectrum Disorder Specific Information and Resources

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is defined by the Autism Society Of America (ASA) as "...a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities."

Those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) or whose loved one or friend has ASD knows that this definition does not clearly define each individual person with this disorder. Instead, each unique person who has ASD has different skills/strengths and different needs.  This portion of the website seeks to provide additional information for the individual who has ASD and his/her family or support network.
