Current Events

Dear Parents,

The events taking place today are writing the history books of the future.  Therefore, I have decided to encourage the students to be aware of “what’s going on” around them.

Almost every Friday, we will share the current events that took place during the week, in our world, our country, our state and local communities.  The students are responsible for obtaining the information outside of the classroom.  In the event a student cannot get information at home, newspapers and computers will be available during recess all week. It is up to them to obtain their own articles.

The following is required of each Current Events assignment:

*Your child will be responsible for learning about one article and writing a one to two paragraph summary (in their own words) about it, every other week. Their summary must come to school with the original article or it will be considered a missed assignment.

*All summaries must be handwritten on the Current Events template provided. No typed work will be accepted. Templates are available in school and on the class website.

*Pictures accompanying the articles must be drawn and colored by the student, not cut from the original newspaper article.

Students will be assigned to a group letter (A or B) and be reminded daily on the homework board, which group is responsible for current events for that week.  Failure to complete this assignment will result in a missed assignment. I will be providing a “Current Events” folder for your child to keep their articles and writing organized.

I will be very selective about what topics can be discussed in class. If I feel a topic is not appropriate for the classroom, I may ask that the topic be discussed at home instead. If you feel that there are any topics that you would rather not be discussed in class please let me know.

Here is a list of ways your child can find more information about current events:

  1. Read the newspaper.
  2. Log on to the following KIDS news websites:
    1. http://www.timeforkids.com/news
    2. http://www.dogonews.com
