Chapter 7 Plan: Cell Structure & Function

Big Idea #3:  Cells have organized membranes and organelles to organize and carryout chemical reactions.

    1. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function for all living things. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    2. Cells occur in two basic forms: Prokaryotes (Bacteria and Archaea) and Eukaryotes (all other cells). (S11.B.1.1.2)
    3. A cell’s interior is separated or compartmentalized from the environment by a phospholipid bilayer plasma membrane. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    4. The cytoplasm contains a collection of connected, internal membranous sacs that divide the cytoplasm into functional and structural compartments or organelles. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    5. Chemical reactions and processes necessary for life are carried out in cytoplasm or organelles within a eukaryotic cell’s protoplasm. (S11.B.1.1.3)
    6. Structure is related to function at the cellular and organelle levels of biological organization. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    7. Cells come only from the division of a pre-existing cell. (S11.B.1.1.3; S11.B.2.2.2)

Lab2:  Use of the Light Microscope (this lab can be completed in 45 minutes)

  • Practice proper handling & use of the light microscope
  • Identify parts of the light microscope
  • Locate objects under a low & high power magnification
  • Prepare a wet mount of an insect leg

 

Day 61

Lab 3: Techniques for Better Microscope Use (this lab can be completed in 45 minutes)

  • Learn what the position of an object is when viewed though a light microscope in relation to its position on the microscope stage
  • Adjust the diaphragm correctly to achieve proper light under low & high power
  • Learn to locate objects at various places in the “depth of field”
  • Use stains to aid in viewing objects
  • Compare the area of view under low & high power

 

BEFORE YOU HAND IN LAB 3:

In answers 1-4 make sure you are clear as to the position & direction things are moving

Make sure that your drawings on page 11 are not just scribble - also make sure that you list the power through which you were viewing.

In part E: make sure that you "counted" (I know this will be an estimate).

Answer question 13.

Make sure answers 14-16 make sense the way you write them. Remember the point of this section is that under high power you will see less area but in more detail.

Big Idea #4:  Organisms seek to maintain a biological balance between their internal and external environments through a variety of mechanisms.

    1. Homeostasis dynamically returns biological changes (body temperature, osmolarity, blood pressure, pH, blood glucose, etc.) to balance by modifying chemical reactions, adjusting energy transformations, and responding to environmental changes. (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)
    2. Molecules, ions, and water move in and out of the cell through a variety of mechanisms, either passive diffusion or active requiring energy. (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)
    3. Passive transport depends on the diffusion of substances with a concentration gradient moving across a membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lesser concentration. (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)
    4. Both passive and facilitated diffusion move materials along a concentration gradient. (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)
    5. Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of lower solute concentration (more aqueous solution) across a membrane to an area higher solute concentration (less aqueous solution). (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)
    6. Active transport moves specific substances mostly against a concentration gradient and requires an expenditure of energy. Examples include membrane-bound, protein pumps that use ATP, electrical gradients generated by ion concentration gradients, exocytosis releasing large molecules outside the cell using secretory vesicles, or endocytosis bringing large molecules into cells by one of two mechanisms: one without receptor-mediated transfer and the other with receptor-mediated transfer. (S11.A.1.3.2; S11.A.3.1.2; S11.B.1.1.3)

 

Big Idea #5:  Eukaryotic cells organize at different levels making it possible for multicellular organisms to create an internal fluid environment meeting their needs and allowing them to occupy diverse environments lethal to single cells.

    1. A multicellular organization enables life functions such as movement, digestion, internal circulation of nutrients, excretion of waste, and reproduction to be subdivided among specialized groups of cells. (S11.B.1.1.1 & 2)
    2. The simplest level of multicellular organization is a tissue. (S11.B.1.1.1 & 2)
    3. Different types of cells and tissues combine to form distinct structures known as organs which perform specific functions. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    4. Organs work together as a system to perform common functions. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    5. Organ systems function to meet an organism’s needs. (S11.B.1.1.1)
    6. Structure is related to function at all biological levels of organization. (S11.B.1.1.1)
