Updated August 23, 2022
The enVision Mathematics program will be the basis of the fifth grade mathematics course at Southern Columbia Area Middle School. This comprehensive program uses a student-centered, problem-solving approach based on Pennsylvania state standards. Students will learn basic mathematical skills in a meaningful context that enables them to apply their knowledge and experience to mathematical concepts. They will also make connections to the world around them and understand the relevance of mathematical principles.
This course will also develop critical thinking and promote higher level problem-solving approaches. Students will learn both traditional and nontraditional methods of solving mathematical problems. They will also practice skills in a variety of engaging ways, which include specially designed games and cooperative activities that will reinforce learning while promoting number sense and mathematical fundamentals. These are integral components of the enVision Mathematics program.
The enVision Mathematics program consists of sixteen Topics, which will be supplemented and enhanced to meet the ever-changing needs of students. Lessons will be designed to build upon previously learned skills and accommodate all learning styles. Students will also receive a Savvas Realize online account, which is a learning managment system and the web-based component for enVision Mathematics. This piece of enVision Mathematics will be an added resource that will offer additional support. A “Common Core" book will serve as the core of classroom practice, and an “Additional Practice Workbook” will be used as the students’ primary source of homework.
The fifth grade mathematics course at Southern Columbia Area Middle School will prepare students for the subsequent middle school mathematics curriculum and transition into higher level courses.
