School Counseling Mission Statement:

Port Allegany School District believes in providing innovative educational services that enable students to acquire and apply the knowledge necessary to become respectful, responsible, self-directed learners. The School Counseling Department sees it as our mission to act as advocates for all students in developing and meeting appropriate academic, career, and personal/ social goals that promote a lifetime of success. Through data measurement and consultation with parents, teachers, and staff, we determine the needs of the students of our district and provide access to individual and group counseling sessions, classroom guidance lessons, and community support services to ensure that all students are challenged and supported to achieve to their highest potential.

 

Philosophy on School Counseling

We believe that all students can learn and should be treated with respect and valued regardless of academic progress, race, gender, sexual orientation, political beliefs, socio-economic status, or religious affiliation.  All students should have equal access to the various opportunities that education has to offer. 

  • It is the philosophy of the school counseling staff at Port Allegany Jr/Sr High School that all students, regardless of race, socioeconomic background, special needs, sexuality, and gender have equal access to an education that promotes lifelong learning and success. 
  • All students have the right/choice to participate in the school counseling program.
  • Port Allegany’s School counseling program is comprehensive in nature and addresses student needs in the academic, personal/social, and career domains. 
  • The school counseling program should be data-driven regarding planning, development, evaluation. 
  • The school counseling program will be planned, developed, and monitored by a certified school counselor, evaluated by the Principal on agreed-upon goals. 
  • The school counseling staff abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association
  • School Counselors will participate in professional development activities essential to maintain a quality school counseling program
