Brightstorm: Population Density (1:37)
Population density is loosely defined as the number of organisms in an area divided by the amount of area. Population density is typically measured in kilometers squared. High population density can cause increased competition for resources while low population density can cause problems with finding mates and inbreeding.
Brightstorm: Dispersion (3:32)
Dispersion is the spreading of a population or organism away from its parents and happens when organisms are looking for additional resources or as an adaptation to environmental changes. Dispersion is influenced by various environmental factors such as temperature or terrain. Animals disperse by moving, while plants have seed dispersal.
Brightstorm: Population Growth (4:30)
Population growth is loosely defined as the change in the amount of individuals of a species in an area over time. To find the growth rate of a population, we take the number of individuals moving into an area and subtract the number of individuals moving out of an area by taking the birth rate, adding the immigration rate and subtracting the death rate and emigration rate. Two types of population growth are exponential and logistic growth.

Objectives
1. Describe the three main properties of a population.

8.1 Vocabulary
population - a group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical area and interbreed
density - the number of individuals per unit area or volume
dispersion - the relative distribution or arrangement of the members of a population within a given amount of space
growth rate - a change in the size of a population over a given period of time
reproductive potential - the maximum number of offspring that each member of a population can produce
exponential growth - growth in which numbers increase by a certain factor in each successive time period (logarithmic growth)
carrying capacity - the largest population that an ecosystem can support at any given time

8.2 Vocabulary
niche - the unique role of a species within an ecosystem
competition - a relationship in which different individuals or populations attempt to use the same limited resources
predation - a relationship in which one organism, the predator, feeds on another organism, the prey
parasitism - a relationship in which one organism, the parasite, lives in or on another organism, the host, and feeds on it
mutualism - a close relationship in which two organisms provide a benefit to each other
commensalism - a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism is neither harmed nor helped
symbiosis - a relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each otherniche
