Chapter 9 The Human Population – Chapter 9 Vocabulary
Brightstorm: Behavioral Ecology (5:38)
Behavioral ecology is the study of ecological and evolutionary causes of behavior in organisms. Behavior is influenced by genetics and the environment and should increase the reproductive fitness of a species. Common behaviors studied including things like learning, communication, foraging, reproductive strategies and social behaviors.
Brightstorm: Population Ecology (2:26)
Population ecology is the study of populations and their interactions with the environment. A population is a group of individuals of a species in a particular area. Population ecology studies things like population growth, selection strategies, population distribution, demographics and how populations evolve and adapt.

DAY 1
Section 9.1 Studying Human Populations
Objectives
1. Describe how the size and growth rate of the human population has changed in the last 200 years.
2. Define four properties that scientists use to predict population sizes.
3. Make predictions about population trends based on age structure.
4. Describe the four stages of the demographic transition.
5. Explain why different countries may be at different stages of the demographic transition.
9.1 Vocabulary
demography - the study of the characteristics of populations, especially human populations
age structure - the classification of members of a population into groups according to age or the distribution of members of a population in terms of age groups
survivorship - the percentage of newborn individuals in a population that can be expected to survive to a given age
fertility rate - the number of births (usually per year) per 1,000 women of childbearing age (usually 15 to 44)
migration - any movement of individuals or populations from one location to another
life expectancy - the average length of time that an individual is expected to live
demographic transition - the general pattern of demographic change from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates

Section 9.2 Changing Population Trends
Objectives
1. Describe three problems caused by rapid human population growth.
2. Compare population growth problems in more developed countries and less developed countries.
3. Analyze strategies countries may use to reduce their population growth.
4. Describe worldwide population projections into the next century.
9.2 Vocabulary
infrastructure - the basic facilities of a country or region, such as roads, bridges, and sewers
arable land - land that can be used to grow crops
urbanization - an increase in the ratio or density of people living in urban areas rather than in rural areas
least developed countries - countries that have been identified by the United Nations as showing the fewest signs of development
