CTC Courses

Automotive Mechanics                                                     year                    3 credits/year

3-year program

     The course in Automotive Mechanics is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to service and repair automotive equipment and to develop skill in the use of tools, service, and diagnostic equipment.  All phases of automotive mechanics, design, operation, and trouble-shooting are covered.  Areas covered include:  engine overhaul, fuel pump installation, standard shift drive line, conventional and front wheel drive line, wheel alignment, brakes, steering, suspension, automatic transmission, tune-up, electrical systems, computerized systems, and fuel management.  Other instruction includes the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and torque wrenches.  Safe working habits are emphasized.  Good reading skills are needed for service interpretation.  Work shoes/pants and/or coveralls are required (These are ordered and purchased at the CTC.) along with safety glasses and work boots/shoes.

This course is a PDE approved program offered at Seneca Highlands Career & Technical Center.  This course meets 4 periods every day.  Students must complete an application and return it to the School Counseling office to be considered for one of the available openings.  (Grades 10-12)

Building Occupations                                                        year                    3 credits/year

3-year program

     In this course, students learn carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electricity, and estimating skills required in the construction industry.  It is recommended that students be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide both fractions and decimals.  The student must be unafraid to climb ladders, have reasonable stamina and strength, and be able to work outside under inclement weather.  In addition, students should have good mechanical aptitude, good manual dexterity, and good eye-hand coordination.  Students must complete many course related projects as well as personal and pbulic projects.  Safety must be maintained at all times in the shop.  Students must supply their own 25’ tape measure, and wear long pants.  Work shirts/pants and/or coveralls are required (These are ordered and purchased at the CTC.) along with safety glasses and work boots/shoes.

Cosmetology                                                                        year                    3 credits/year

3-year program

     Student enrollees are trained in theory, manipulative skills, safety, and specific work characteristics necessary to obtain licensure as a Cosmetologist in the state of Pennsylvania.  Excellent attendance is necessary to acquire the 1250 hours required to sit for the Cosmetology Boards.

Upon completion of the three-year course, the successful graduate will be able to:

  • Exhibit a positive work attitude and self-confidence in dealing with the customer.

  • Effectively communicate and exhibit proper appearance and conduct when dealing with clients.

  • Perform specific manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin care and makeup, manicures, pedicures, massage therapy and artificial nails.

  • To apply learned theory and technical training as part of the decision-making process in determining the appropriate makeup, hairstyle, and color to complement the customer’s general appearance to improve self-image.

  • Pass the state board examination for a Pennsylvania cosmetologist license.

  • Begin work in a licensed cosmetology salon in the state of Pennsylvania.

Prior to the start of the program, enrollees are required to acquire a social security number, and must have successfully completed the ninth grade.  Upon program entry, the student must purchase a uniform, white shoes, and a cosmetology kit (Kit and uniform approximately $160).

Culinary Arts                                                                       year                    3 credits/year

3-year program

Course completers are recognized with a Certificate status – Cook.

Institutional Food Workers (CIP Code 12.0508) related area of study.

     This program prepares students for immediate employment into commercial, institutional and other food careers at entry level employment, or for entrance into a post-secondary training institution.  Planned instructional and hands-on learning experiences include theory and applications related to planning, selecting, purchasing, preparing (cooking and baking), and serving of quality and quantity food and food products; nutrition, use and care of commercial equipment and food safety. Practical experiences are a major portion of the course of study through the operation and management of a complete restaurant (Eagle’s Nest) and kitchen facility.  Students operate and maintain all facets of our full-service facility.  

Initial class fee:  Uniforms - approximately $100.

Third-year students, or those wishing to obtain a Safe Food Handler’s Permit certification:  ServSafe Essential textbook - $90.

Health Assistant                                                                 year                    3 credits/year

2-year program

      Health Assistant students learn the competencies required to secure a position in the health care field or other health occupations.  The student will perform the following services:  bedside care of patients, basic nursing skills, collecting lab specimens, documenting in a medical record, emergency care, and elder care setting.  The student will receive both theory and practical hands-on experience that includes the knowledge needed to acquire a position, and the job survival skills to remain employed.  Students who complete the program are eligible to take the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Certification exam. Additionally, students who complete the Health Occupations portion of the program will receive a CPR and First Aid certificate.

Prerequisites:

  • Students enrolling in this program must request a criminal record check through the Pennsylvania State Police.  This will be done at the Career & Technical Center at a cost of $10.

  • Enrollees must obtain a medical physical stating that they are free from communicable diseases and can fully physically participate in the program prior to entering the program.

  • Students also must be administered a two-step Mantoux test (TB test) and a drug test which are provided by the Career & Technical Center.

  • Additionally, if the student has NOT been a resident of Pennsylvania for the last two years an FBI clearance is required BEFORE entering the program.

  • Enrollees must participate in a mandatory urine drug test provided by the CTC prior to acceptance to the program.

  • Uniform tops and pants (color to be determined by the class), white shoes, and a watch with a sweep second hand are mandatory for clinical.

Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technology/Technician    year             3 credits/year

3-year program

     This is a three year program designed to provide students with the technical knowledge and job-related skills necessary for the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty equipment such as trucks, trailers, bulldozers, loaders, tractors, excavators, hydraulic attachments, compressors and the gasoline or diesel engines that power them.  Instruction includes shop safety, tool use and the inspection, diagnostic and maintenance procedures for brakes, undercarriages, operating controls, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, electrical circuitry, engines and power trains.  Instruction also includes a variety of techniques of arc welding and oxygen acetylene cutting.  Some of the industry certifications include Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection certification, SP-2, Bendix ABT 101, and Cummins virtual college.  Students may also earn Dual-Enrollment credits for Pennsylvania College of Technology.  The use of technical/service manuals and organized work practices are highly stressed.  Work shirts/pants and/or coveralls are required (These are ordered and purchased at the the CTC.) along with safety glasses and work boots/shoes.  (Grades 10-12)

Metal Working Occupations                                              year                   3 credits/year

3-year program

     Metal Working Occupations is a three-year program designed to provide students with entry level skills for career opportunities in the machine tool field.  The students will gain technical knowledge and skill in the set-up and operation of the vertical milling machines, engine lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, band saws, and other support equipment.  Students will receive varied instruction in safety, measuring, shop math, inspection and metallurgy.  Students will learn entry-level skills in the operation and Optical Comparator, lathes, CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled Machines) and milling machines.  Both laboratory and project-based learning will be used extensively.  Work-site experiences will be incorporated in the form of field trips, shadowing and part-time employment, as opportunitites are available.  Students will develop team skills necessary for employment and advancement and will have the opportunity to examine options in machining.  Students will earn National Institute Metal Workings Skills (NIMS) credentials.  Shop jacket must be purchased.  Students must have long pants.  (Work shirts/pants and/or coveralls are required (These are ordered and purchased at the CTC.)  along with safety glasses and work boots/shoes.

Network Systems Technology                                      year                   3 credits/year
 
3-year program
 
   This is an industry-based instructional program that consists of six distinct and separate semesters.  Students enrolled must satisfactorily meet Cisco-outlined competensies prior to advancing to the next semester.  The goal of this program is to teach students the skills needed to design, build, and maintain network systems.  The curricula consist of instruction in electronic communications networks, design and evaluation, distance communications systems, computer systems facilities, and support and design and evaluation.  Each year will be offered a dual enrollment opportunity to receive college credits through Pennsylvania College of Technology.  (CCENT certification upon successfully passing test)  Initial class fee:  Uniforms, approximately $20

Welding Technology                                                          year                   3 credits/year
 
3-year program
     In the welding program, students will learn the basics of welding in the most common processes.  Stick, tig and mig welding will be the primary methods.  Cutting processes such as oxyfuel, plasma, and air arc gouging will also be covered in detail.  Students will learn the best methods for preparing and fitting their materials to achieve the best weld possible.  Students will be trained on how to choose the best welding process suited to complete the job in the most cost- and time-effective manor.  As with any hands on job skill, training in safety will be paramount and the best practices will be taught.  Students will need to provide their own welding jackets, gloves, steel-toed boots, vice-grips, tape measures, denim jeans, and cotton shirts.
