Students will gain an understanding of how and why the government motivated citizens to take advantage of the opportunities of the Homestead Act of 1862. Students will also investigate the challenges faced by families as they became pioneers of the west.

- analyze the characteristics of sod houses and how they demonstrate the environmental challenges of farming on the Great Plains at that time
- explain both the positive and negative aspects and effects of homesteading

- Student will look at cover page of unit and discuss picture. Also read unit overview to activate prior knowledge.

Question #2: Thinking about the 1860's, list which reasons from Question #1 you think applied to the people moving in the 1860's and which probably did not?
