Section 3.1 The Geosphere

Objectives

1. Describe the composition and structure of the Earth.

2. Describe the Earth’s tectonic plates.

3. Explain the main cause of earthquakes and their effects.

4. Identify the relationship between volcanic eruptions and climate change.

5. Describe how wind and water alter the Earth’s surface.

3.1 Vocabulary

geosphere - the solid part of the Earth that consists of all rock, as well as the soils and loose rocks on Earth's surface

crust - the Earth's thin outer layer composed almost entirely of light elements and is 5 km to 70 km thick

mantle - the layer of rock below the surface, makes up 64% of the mass of the Earth and is about 2,900 km thick

core - Earth's innermost layer, composed of the densest elements

lithosphere - the solid, outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle

asthenosphere- the solid, plastic layer of the mantle beneath the lithosphere that flows very slowly and allows tectonic plates to move               

tectonic plate - huge pieces of the lithosphere

erosion - the removal and transport of surface material

seismic wave - the waves that travel through Earth's interior during an earthquake

fault - a break in the Earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another

earthquake - vibrations of the Earth's crust caused by slippage along a fault

magnitude - the measure of the energy released by an earthquake

tsunami - large waves caused by an earthquake           

volcano - a mountain built from magma that rises from the Earth's interior to its surface

Section 3.2 The Atmosphere

Objectives

1. Describe the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere.

2. Describe the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

3. Explain three mechanisms of heat transfer in Earth’s atmosphere.

4. Explain the greenhouse effect.

 

3.2 Vocabulary

atmosphere - the mixture of gases that surround the Earth

troposphere - the atmospheric layer nearest Earth's surface and extends 18 km above the surface               

stratosphere - the atmosphere layer that extends from 18 km above Earth's surface to 50 km

ozone - a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms, O3

radiation - the transfer of energy through space

conduction - the flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object

convection - the transfer of heat by air circulation

greenhouse effect- the process of warming the surface and lower atmosphere of the Earth when trapped gases in the air absorb and reradiate infrared radiation (heat)

aerosols- tiny, liquid droplets found in the atmosphere

thermosphere  -  the atmospheric layer farthest from Earth's surface

ionosphere -  the lower thermosphere

ions - electrically charged atoms

convection current - the circular motion of air caused by the continual process of warm air rising and cool air sinking

greenhouse gases - the gases in the atmosphere that trap and radiate heat - water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide

The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the Earth and is comprised mainly of Nitrogen and Oxygen. The atmosphere also contains traces of gases like carbon dioxide, neon, helium, etc. There are 5 main layers of the atmosphere: the troposphere, the stratosphere, the mesosphere, the thermosphere and the exosphere.

3.3 Vocabulary

water cycle - the process in which liquid water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor

evaporation - the process in which liquid is changed into gas

condensation - water vapor that forms droplets on dust particles

precipitation - rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls from clouds

salinity - the measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid

fresh water - water that contains insignificant amounts of salt, as in lakes and rivers

biosphere - the part of Earth where life exists

world ocean  - a single, large, interconnected body of water that covers 70% of Earth’s surface

pack ice - ice formed when either waves or wind drive together frozen sea water into a large mass               

tributaries - smaller streams or rivers that flow into larger ones

aquifer - a rock layer that stores and allows the flow of ground water

recharge zone - land surface area where water enters an aquifer

closed system - a system that allows the flow of energy in and out, but not matter

open system - both matter and energy are exchanged between a system and the surrounding environment

The water cycle tracks the movement of water as it progresses through the states of matter and travels through the biosphere. Most of the water on earth is found in its oceans, but when the surface of a body of water gets warm it vaporizes, entering the air as gas and rising to form clouds. As more and more water enters the air it precipitates and falls to earth as rain or snow. Then it either returns to the oceans or falls to earth, sinking into the soil or flowing into rivers.

The biosphere is the zone of air, land and water where organisms exist. It is commonly known as the global sum of all ecosystems and consists of several layers including the atmosphere, the lithosphere and the hydrosphere.
