Chapter 10 Biodiversity – Chapter 10 Vocabulary

Biodiversity is the amount of variety of organisms in a particular area and is typically used to measure the "health" of an ecosystem. Biodiversity usually encompasses genetic diversity (variations within individual populations), ecosystem diversity (within ecosystems) and landscape diversity (range of differing ecosystems within an area).

Section 10.1 What is Biodiversity?

Objectives

1. Describe the diversity of species types on Earth, relating the difference between known numbers and estimated numbers.

2. List and describe three levels of biodiversity.

3. Explain four ways in which biodiversity is important to ecosystems and humans.

4. Analyze the potential value of a single species.

10.1 Vocabulary

biodiversity - the variety of organisms in a given area; the variety of species in a community, or the variety of communities in an ecosystem

gene - a segment of DNA that is located in a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait

keystone species - a species that is critical to the functioning of the ecosystem in which it lives because it affects the other species in its community

ecotourism - a form of tourism that supports the conservation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas

Section 10.2 Biodiversity at Risk

Objectives

1. Define and give examples of endangered and threatened species.

2. Describe several ways that species are being threatened with extinction globally.

3. Explain which types of threats are having the largest impact on biodiversity.

4. List areas of the world that have high levels of biodiversity and many threats to species.

5. Compare the amount of biodiversity in the United States to that of the rest of the world.

10.2 Vocabulary

endangered species - a species that has been identified to be in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant part of its range

threatened species - a species that has been identified to be likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future

exotic species - a species that is not native to a particular region

poaching - the illegal harvesting of fish, game, or other species

endemic species - a species that is native to a particular place and that is found only there

Brightstorm: Habitat Destruction (2:36)

Habitat destruction is when a natural habitat is altered or destroyed so that it can no longer support the species that lives there. A habitat is commonly defined as the environment where a particular species lives and habitat destruction can cause the migration or extinction of a species. Causes of habitat destruction include things like human activity, climate change, natural disasters and geological processes.

Natural resource depletion is loosely defined as when resources are used up in an area. Non-renewable resources (things like oil and trees) will eventually be depleted while renewable resources (things like wind and sun) typically are not entirely depleted.

Endangered species are defined as a species that is in immediate danger of going extinct. Species become endangered through a number of factors including disease, human activities and competition with other species. Examples of endangered species include the mountain gorilla and the black rhino. Another category is something called a threatened or vulnerable species. These are species that are in danger in the near-term.

Objectives

1. List and describe four types of efforts to save individual species.

2. Explain the advantages of protecting entire ecosystems rather than individual species.

3. Describe the main provisions of the Endangered Species Act.

4. Discuss ways in which efforts to protect endangered species can lead to controversy.

5. Describe three examples of worldwide cooperative efforts to prevent extinctions.

10.3 Vocabulary

germ plasm - hereditary material (chromosomes and genes) that is usually contained i the protoplasm of germ cells

Endangered Species Act - an act that the U.S. Congress passed in 1973 to protect any plant or animal species in danger of extinction

habitat conservation plan - land-use plan attempting to protect endangered species that balances harm to the species and conservation commitments among cooperating parties

Biodiversity Treaty - an international agreement aimed at strengthening national control and preservation of biological resources
