Bayfront Migrant Summer Program

I had the pleasure of being the acting principal of the 2012 Bayfront Migrant Summer Program.  I assisted in coordinating activities, discipline, curriculum enhancement, scheduling, summer foods program monitoring, building management and progress monitoring.  I also coordinated efforts between Erie City School District Staff, Bayfront Maritime Center staff, and Northwest tri-County intermediate unit Staff.

Executive Director, Richard Eisenberg, and his Bayfront Maritime Center staff provide unique hands-on learning experiences which focus on sailing, water safety, and other maritime skills. Students learn how to read a nautical chart, how to handle a variety of vessels on the water, how to identify parts of a boat, how to use a GPS and how to interpret weather forecasts and conditions. The students are given the opportunity to go canoeing, kayaking and sailing.

The primary objective for the 2012 summer session was to increase literacy, so a partnership was established with Edinboro University's Graduate Reading Specialist Program. The intent was to provide individualized instruction for eligible students as they participated in a reading clinic.  Students were also involved in a distance learning program connecting migrant programs across Pennsylvania with Jouquin Zihuataenej, a world renowned poet located in Texas.

Students are also given instruction in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Wellness, Computer Skills, Art and Mexican culture. The 2012 students painted a beautiful mural and learned the art of Mexican culture through artistic expression, song and dance. After learning the parts of a boat, students built and painted their own models of the Erie Boat. Wellness activities included soccer, basketball, volleyball, jump rope and hula hooping!

Students experienced building with a ShopBot, a digital fabrication machine. The Maritime teachers built a set of interlocking building blocks with the kids and many children designed and carved a wooden plaque with their name on it.
