 This page contains details on resources for students to practice Geometry skills. Below you will find a list of websites, which can be used to provide practice or review Geometry. There are also two subpages, which show a list of children’s literature that relate to the topic, as well as vocabulary. These resources can be used at home to give extra practice on the subject. 1. Mirror Tool

Type: Symmetry, Properties of Shapes, Recognizing Shapes.

Description: This section of the website “Illuminations: Resources of Teaching Math” enables the visitor to choose a shape or picture, to check if said shape is symmetrical. The student can investigate the different properties of shapes, to compare which shape is commonly symmetrical, and which shape is not. By the simple click of a button, the “Mirror Tool” will show the reflection of the shape that the student has chosen. If the object is symmetrical, they will see an exact mirror image.

2. Cutting Corners

Type: Recognizing Shapes, Properties of Shapes.

Description: This section of the website “Illuminations: Resources of Teaching Math” allows the students to see shapes that they do not normally come across during their lessons; such as scalene triangles and rhombuses. The cutting tool works to cut certain pieces out of a chosen shape, so that students can see the varies pieces that make up a specific shape. This website is easy to use, but lacks the excitement of other sections of Illuminations. However, it is a good tool to be used to discover the characteristics of common shapes that can be used for brief practices of exploring shapes.

3. Tangrams

Type: Recognizing Shapes,  Properties of Shapes, Tangrams.

Description: This website allows the visitor to choose a shape to be filled in by Tangram pieces. The goal of the exercise is for the Tangrams not to overlap, during the duration of this activity. This website is provides a good opportunity for students to explore the properties of shapes, and how they fit together to create new shapes, and even pictures!

4. Geoboards

Type: Properties of Shapes, Geoboards. 

Description: This website provides an online Geoboard that can be used to make shapes. On the right side of this website is a prompt, which ask for the visitor to make a shape using only a certain amount of pegs; these shapes vary. This allows the perfect opportunity to familiarize a child with the use of Geoboards, and challenge them to really think how certain shapes are shaped. The child might need assistance with this website because it is easy to get frustrated when certain problems can not be figured out.

5. Maze Game

Type: Plotting Points (Coordinates).

Description: The goal of this game if for the visitor to plot coordinate points, using the “X=” AND “Y=” keys, to get a small robot to the end of a maze, which appears as regular grafting paper. The robot should not touch any of the mines that are scattered at specific points in the grid. This game allows a student to practice plotting point on a graft; the student will also have fun in the process.
