Welcome to the Algebra Vocabulary Page. Below is a list of vocabulary terms that are important to understand Algebra. Along with each vocabulary word is a picture that further explains the definition. Look out for more words being added to this list as the school year continues.
Vocabulary
1. Binomial: An expression that is a sum or difference of two terms, as 3x + 2y and x2 − 4x.
Ex:
2. Coefficient: A number or quantity placed (generally) before and multiplying another quantity, as 3 in the expression 3x.
Ex:
3. Ratio: The relation between two similar magnitudes with respect to the number of times the first contains the second: the ratio of 5 to 2, written 5:2 or 5/2.
Ex:
4. Combination: The act of combining or the state of being combined.
Ex:
5. Inverse: Reversed in position, order, direction, or tendency; (of a proportion) containing terms of which an increase in one results in a decrease in another. A term is said to be in inverse proportion to another term if it increases (or decreases) as the other decreases (or increases).
